The Bank of Nova Scotia Trust Company acts as Trustee for the J.P. Bickell Foundation.

J.P. Bickell Foundation makes grants to registered charities in Ontario.

The Foundation was established by Canadian businessman J.P. Bickell to support three charitable programs, as well as annual support to The Hospital for Sick Children.


Grants to Ontario Charities

The largest granting program is open to all Ontario charities that meet the minimum grant requirements, regardless of cause. This program provides grants in the range of $5,000 to $450,000. Find out if your charity qualifies.

Medical Research Grants

The medical research grants programs supports young investigators working at Ontario institutions. Each qualifying institution may submit one application. Application forms and guidelines are provided to the institutions. There are five to seven applicants chosen to receive grants of approximately $25,000 to $80,000 each.


Mining Scholarships

Annual scholarships of at least $2,000 are awarded to post-secondary students of Ontario mining programs. Recipients are chosen by the university or college scholarship selection committee and recommended to the J.P. Bickell Foundation. Students must reapply each year.


J.P. Bickell Foundation primarily supports health, medical research, arts and culture, social services, the environment, and education in Ontario.


Program Areas

  • 50% of annual income is paid to The Hospital for Sick Children for research
  • 35% supports registered charities in Ontario, in education, the arts, health, the environment, and social services.
  • 10% supports medical research in Ontario
  • 5% supports scholarships at Ontario universities and colleges offering courses in Mining
